How the Portfolio Portal works

A risk-free way to practice investing and learn — no real money or shares are ever involved. Here's exactly how it works, end to end.

1. Register

Sign up with your name, email, phone and a password. No documents or real money needed.

2. Get approved

Our team reviews and approves new accounts. Once approved, your virtual trading capital is activated.

3. Start with virtual capital

You begin with Rs 1,000,000, plus Rs 50,000 added automatically for every full month since your approval — so your available capital keeps growing over time.

4. Buy and sell India-listed shares

Trade any NSE-listed company, only while the real market is open (9:15 AM–3:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday, excluding market holidays) — outside those hours the trade form is disabled with a note telling you when it reopens. You enter the current market price yourself, and our team audits it against the real market price. You can only sell shares from a buy that our team has already verified — a pending (not-yet-reviewed) buy can't be sold until it's verified.

5. Costs and tax apply, just like real trading

A 0.25% transaction charge applies to every buy and sell. When you sell at a profit, capital gains tax is deducted automatically — short-term (held 365 days or less) at 20%, long-term at 12.5%. Losses are adjusted against gains the same way the Income Tax rules work: a short-term loss can reduce both short-term and long-term tax for the year, while a long-term loss can only reduce long-term tax — so a later loss can even refund some tax collected on an earlier gain within the same financial year.

6. Stay diversified, and stay within your funds

You can hold at most 10 different companies at once. You can always add to a company you already hold — this limit only stops you from spreading into an 11th new name. If a trade would use more than your available balance, you'll see a clear "not enough funds" message and the order won't go through.

7. Track your own record

Every dashboard shows your balance, holdings, unrealized P&L and full transaction history. You can add a short remark to every trade explaining your reasoning — useful for reviewing your own decisions later. If our team ever flags one of your trades (excludes it from your totals, usually over a price discrepancy), it disappears from your main history but you can still see it — with the reason — on your Flagged Transactions page for 30 days.

7a. How your balance and holdings are actually calculated

To make sure nobody can use more than their real funds or game the numbers with an incorrect price, we follow a fixed set of rules: (1) every BUY reduces your available balance the moment you place it, whether or not it has been reviewed yet; (2) you can only sell shares from a BUY our team has already verified — a pending or flagged buy can't be sold; (3) if a SELL is later flagged, it is fully reversed — the shares go back into your holdings and the trade is removed from your balance calculation entirely; (4) a SELL's proceeds are only added to your available balance once our team verifies it, not the moment you place it; (5) any transaction charge or tax tied to a flagged transaction is removed from your totals along with it; (6) unrealized gain/loss on anything you hold is always calculated from our team's own uploaded market prices, never from a price you entered yourself. Together, these mean the platform never lets your balance go negative through self-entered prices, and a flagged trade leaves no partial trace in either your balance or your holdings.

8. Compare yourself on the leaderboard

Everyone is ranked by XIRR (annualized return), shown alongside a simpler absolute return % (total gain or loss as a percentage of capital deployed, not annualized). XIRR only appears once your account has been approved for at least 3 months — before that, only the absolute return % is shown, since XIRR isn't meaningful yet over such a short period. Click any name on the leaderboard to see their full portfolio and trade remarks — a good way to learn from what others are doing.

9. See the bigger picture

The Insights page shows platform-wide activity: total trades, capital deployed, most-traded shares, and the top performer.

These numbers (starting capital, monthly top-up, transaction cost, tax rates, holdings limit) are configurable by our team and may be updated from time to time — this page always reflects the current settings.
